It can often withstand several strikes, allowing it to chip away at opponents' health. Uxie is weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost moves, but as a pure Psychic-type, it does not have any extreme vulnerabilities. This helps its defensive capabilities greatly.
Unfortunately, Uxie does not have access to many great moves, leaving it mostly as a defensive wall. While Uxie excels in defensive stats, Azelf does the same as an attacker. It has high Attack and Special Attack stats, as well as a high Speed stat. This makes it an excellent Glass Cannon with several powerful moves. It functions best as a Special attacker because most of the moves it has access to from leveling up are Special. However, it has unimpressive defenses, so if it does not handle opponents immediately, it can be in a great deal of trouble.
If it can take out enemies quickly, though, it can be a capable fighter. Mesprit is the most well-rounded of the Lake Guardians, having the same stat value for both Attack and Defense. While its Speed is the lowest of the three, it can both withstand hits and strike back against foes with great force. Its accessible moves are lacking, with Mesprit only able to learn a few viable attacks via leveling up, but its relatively high Attack and Special Attack stats help to make up for its mediocre options.
When in its Land Forme, the Mythical Shaymin's stats are all equal. It makes it a consistent pick, though, being able to take a fair bit of damage and use attacks with a good amount of speed.
When in its Sky Forme, though, Shaymin's stat spread changes dramatically. It gains much more speed and much higher Attack and Special Attack stats, lowering its defenses in the process. Both versions are useful, depending on the playstyle.
Its best stats are its Special Attack and Speed. The counterpart to Dialga, Palkia is the ruler of space. Palkia really isn't doing anything too cool, which is why it takes a spot near the bottom of the list. It got Roar of Time'd down here. While Palkia may not have the best moveset for the modern competitive scene, they can still be dangerous if their trainer has a bit of luck and stacks things in their favor.
Palkia's signature move, the Dragon-type Spacial Rend, has a higher chance of dealing a critical hit, which makes it able to get by a foe's defensive boosts. A similar move, the Ghost-type Shadow Claw, can also be learned by this legendary. By teaching Palkia both of these moves and giving them a Razor Claw to hold, trainers can turn this Sinnoh sea dragon into a crit-machine.
Phione marked the first time that a legendary could breed though, so that must count for something? Finding a legendary in the game that was literally never mentioned anywhere is always a cool experience, though, Heatran is weird. It's found in the Survival Area's Stark Mountain and is accessible after a small story segment. Its inclusion is just kind of Also, it's one of the only legendaries that can be male or female, though cannot breed, which raises some questions by fans.
Since Gen IV, Heatran has been getting wrecked by Ground-type attacks due to their x4 weakness to this element, though, against most other attacks it is pretty resilient thanks to usable defensive stats, which come in at each. The Lake Trio are included on this list as a single entry because they all do the same thing. Azelf is definitely the best in terms of design, Mespirit looks tired, and Uxie looks dead, so it really didn't have any competition.
Offensively inclined Azelf is an excellent lead that can be used to set up Stealth Rock on turn 1 and use a surprise Explosion on turn 2 to start any battle off with a bang. Balanced Mesprit can throw a wrench into the opponent's plans with tricky moves such as Flatter and Imprison.
